What the world needs now is more people with the heart and soul of Captain Swenson. I was moved to tears today when I watched the video account of his unbelievable acts of heroism in Afghanistan. He’s the kind of person that makes you proud to be an American, and on a broader scale, proud to be a member of the human race. At least that segment of the race that puts integrity, honor and the welfare of others ahead of personal agendas, self-preservation and greed.
The irony of this modern day tale of heroism is that Capt. Swenson has been unemployed and struggling since his discharge. As he continues to reach out to the survivors and support the widows of that battle, he has been discredited and even villainized for his version of what really went down that day. Until that pesky footage from a medi-vac pilot’s helmet cam surfaced recently capturing the gritty, gruesome reality that transpired in that desert battle. Gotta love this era of emerging uber-technology. Will it ultimately be the savior of humanity?
And all of this against the backdrop of Day 15 of the Government Shutdown. Since I have been laid up with a virulent flu, I have been held captive by the CNN “blow by blow” account in D.C. The rhetoric, posturing and lies have exceeded my capacity to comprehend, let alone stomach. So, as I regain my health and venture out into the world and away from the TV, I have great hopes that the Women on Capitol Hill may actually save the proverbial day. Could an overdose of testosterones on steroids ultimately be the downfall of our country as we know it? I don’t know, but I am not going to tune in to find out…
I’m off to smell some roses, feed some hummingbirds and rejoice in the day’s beauty.
